Background
Charity Harris is an artist who creates wearable sculptures from second-hand and ready-made materials. Harris uses her Southern upbringing as a driving force for the content that fuels her work— race, religion and the human relationship to nature. She combines her use of "humble materials" with her love of natural textures and historic costume to express her unique experiences and explore her identity as a Southern African American woman. In her time spent obtaining a Bachelor of Art degree from Georgia State University, her study of textiles expanded to an exploration of merging fiber and sculpture. Harris was most recently a Hughley Fellow, and a previous Idea Capital grant recipient. Her work has been exhibited in the Ernst G. Welch Gallery and The Museum of Contemporary Art Georgia. She has been featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution, the textile publication Fiber Art Now and regional publications BURNAWAY and Withal.
